The NIO Intraosseous Access Device functions differently from manual and drill based devices, the NIO design is not based on needle length but rather proximity to the bone when the needle is deployed. When the needle is deployed, the user is required to apply firm pressure with the palm of the hand – the pressure applied causes localised compression at the incision site, which shortens the distance the needle needs to travel.

By offering instant intravascular access, the delivery of fluids and medication flows at higher rates than IV infusion. With the help of the NIO Paediatric™, IO infusion can be established in less than 10 seconds by simply positioning and pressing firmly into place on either the proximal tibia or proximal humerus. Safety features to prevent accidental deployment and user error:
