We really like what Olimex have done here with the AVR-T32U4 (non-catchy name aside) – you get an ATMEGA32U4-based microcontroller, with comms built-in (no need for an external FTDI chip), in a format that plugs straight into your standard breadboard including power fed to your breadboard’s bus lanes!
The board uses a robust Mini-USB connector (grab a compatible cable here) and includes LEDs, a reset button and a programmable button too (pin 33/D7), which are both out of the way to the side. A comprehensive user manual is on hand to guide you with the board and get you started.
